Save Money on Office Supplies

Mar 13th, 2010 Posted in Shopping | no comment »

Setting up an office, whether it’s at home or in an office building, can get very pricey. Between your desk, printer table, chairs and other necessary accessories, you may think it’s impossible to furnish your office for cheap. You also have to contend with daily office supplies like paper and printer ink that can eat away your budget. The following resources and ideas will help you run your business smoothly without breaking the bank.

Before you start, make a list of your must have items. Your needs will differ based on the type of business that you run. If you own and operate a business where you won’t need to see clients in your office, you can cut corners and go for function over looks. But if you’re going to host clients, you’ll want to make sure that your office appears professional. In this case, you may want to spend more on decorations and guest seating than you would otherwise.

You can either try to find cheap, new furniture or find quality used furniture at a discount. If you are meeting clients in your office, it may be best to try to find quality pieces that have been discounted for some reason. This way you’ll give off the impression of being established and having a big budget, even if you don’t have one.

To find quality furniture at low prices, you can go one of several places. Thrift stores often have great office supply finds. Filing cabinets, desks and shelving units can be purchased very cheaply. The styles you find at thrift stores may be a little outdated, but they are normally well-built pieces that have withstood the test of time. If the furniture is worn, you can sand and repaint or stain it to give it a fresh, new face. Another resource for low cost office furniture is office furniture liquidation sales. Liquidation sales held by furniture stores, office supply stores or corporate furniture rental companies can be a great place to find the quality furniture you are looking for. Check your local paper to find these types of sales.

Besides furniture, you’ll also need to purchase office supplies that will help your business run on a daily basis. Copy paper, calendars, pens, cartridges and other necessary items can cost you a lot if you don’t shop wisely. The easiest way to save money on office supplies is to comparison shop. You’ll have a hard time figuring out exactly how many pieces of paper you use each month, or how many post it notes you’ll need. But if you find the right price for your supplies, you’ll save a lot of money. Make a list of the types of supplies that you’ll need to help your business run smoothly. Then do some research online to compare prices.

You can also save money in the long run by buying in bulk. For example, instead of buying paper by the ream, you’ll pay less if you buy it by the case. You can do the same with ink, pens and other common supplies. Even though the costs at the outset will be higher, you’ll save money on the cost per item.

A Metal File Cabinet Is as Sturdy as Wood

Nov 6th, 2009 Posted in Home | no comment »

Getting yourself a quality metal file cabinet is important, as it will be holding onto your files and must be strong enough to be useful for a long time. Ones which are constructed out of metal are much more durable than those made out of plywood or particle board, but they are also slightly less sturdy than those that are constructed out of wood. However, metal cabinets are cheaper than those which are wooden.

Sizes of Metal Filing Cabinet

The size of metal file cabinet that you want for your specific purposes will be based on the type of documents that you are planning to store in the cabinet. There are four normal file cabinet sizes that you might consider: 1. Letter sized: This type of cabinet will almost always hold only 8.5″ x 11″ paper and files. Most home offices use this type of metal file cabinet.

2. Legal sized: This model of cabinet is made to hold both documents that are letter-sized as well as legal sized documents that are 8.5″ x 14″.

3. Lateral file cabinets: These are made of two or three drawers and can hold both legal and letter sized documents.

4. Personal file cabinet: These cabinets are smaller, less expensive, and hold only 8.5″ x 11″ letter sized files. When choosing a file cabinet that will fit both sizes of paper, both legal and letter, remember that most cabinets will have sliding metal brackets that allow you to adjust for smaller or larger folders as needed.

Picking a Metal Filing Cabinet

When choosing your metal file cabinet, you should keep in mind how many drawers that you need (and allow future file needs as well). It is possible to find file cabinets with up to five drawers. If you plan to use the cabinet for storage purposes other than storing documents, take that fact into consideration when deciding how many drawers you will need. Also, if you plan on needing more than one metal file cabinet, you should think about buying one, two, or more at the same time as a few retailers will offer a special discount for multiple purchases of the same type of cabinet, or cabinets in the same line.

It is important that you not fill up the top drawer of your metal file cabinet while keeping the lower drawers totally or almost empty because this can become a top-heavy cabinet that may topple and hurt someone. Only open one drawer at one time to ensure that the weight of the cabinet’s drawers are balanced. Attach the cabinet to the wall to help reduce the possibility of falling over. Put heavier items in the bottom drawer to weigh the cabinet down and help to keep it in one place.

Every office needs a file cabinet of some sort. If you do not want to have to spend big bucks on one like you would with wood, consider a metal file cabinet.
